Engineers like to think they argue with pure logic. In practice, technical debates are full of reasoning errors that look convincing on the surface but fall apart under scrutiny. A fallacy is not just a wrong conclusion; it is a broken argument structure. The conclusion might even be correct, but the reasoning used to reach it is invalid. What Makes an Argument Valid?

A valid argument has premises that, if true, guarantee the conclusion. A sound argument is valid and its premises are actually true. A fallacy is an argument where the conclusion does not follow from the premises, regardless of whether the conclusion happens to be correct.

Why Fallacies Matter in Engineering

In a design meeting, the best technical solution does not always win. The most persuasive argument wins. If that argument contains a fallacy, your team might adopt an inferior design. Conversely, if your valid argument gets shot down by a fallacious counter-argument that you cannot identify, you lose the debate despite being right. Recognizing fallacies is a practical engineering skill, not an academic exercise.

Fallacies That Attack the Person or Source



Ad Hominem (Attack the Person)

Definition: Dismissing an argument by attacking the person making it, rather than addressing the argument itself.

During a code review, a junior developer suggests refactoring the database layer. A senior engineer responds: “You have been here three months. You do not understand the codebase well enough to suggest architectural changes.” The junior developer’s experience level is irrelevant to whether the refactoring idea has technical merit. The argument should be evaluated on its own terms.

Genetic Fallacy

Definition: Judging an idea based on its origin rather than its content.

“That library was written by a game developer, so it will not be suitable for our embedded system.” The author’s background does not determine the library’s suitability. Its API, memory footprint, performance characteristics, and test coverage do.

Appeal to Authority

Definition: Accepting a claim because someone with authority or prestige said it, rather than because of supporting evidence.

“Linus Torvalds says that debuggers make you lazy, so we should not use GDB.” Torvalds is an expert in kernel development, but his personal preference about debugging tools is not a technical argument. The question is whether GDB helps your team find bugs faster, not whether a famous person approves.

Fallacies That Distort the Argument



Straw Man

Definition: Misrepresenting someone’s argument to make it easier to attack, then attacking the distorted version.

Developer A: “We should add unit tests for the critical path modules.”

Developer B: “So you want us to stop shipping features and spend the next month writing tests for every function? We have deadlines.”

Developer A suggested testing critical path modules. Developer B distorted this into “test every function and stop all feature work.” The distorted version is easy to reject, but it is not what was proposed.

Red Herring

Definition: Introducing an irrelevant topic to divert attention from the original argument.

Engineer A: “Our API response times have degraded by 40% since the last release. We need to investigate.”

Engineer B: “Well, our uptime has been 99.97% this quarter, which is better than last quarter.”

Uptime is a different metric from response time. The uptime fact is true but irrelevant to the performance regression being discussed. It diverts the conversation away from the actual problem.

Equivocation

Definition: Using a word with multiple meanings and switching between them mid-argument.

“Our system is ‘real-time.’ Therefore it needs an RTOS.” The word “real-time” means different things: in marketing it often means “fast” or “live updating,” while in engineering it means “guaranteed worst-case response times.” A dashboard that updates every second is “real-time” in the marketing sense but does not need deterministic scheduling guarantees.

Fallacies That Limit Options



False Dichotomy (Either/Or Fallacy)

Definition: Presenting only two options when more exist.

“Either we rewrite the entire system in Rust, or we accept that we will keep having memory safety bugs in C.” This ignores many intermediate options: using static analysis tools, adopting safer C coding standards, rewriting only the most critical modules in Rust, using memory-safe wrappers, or adding runtime memory checks.

Nirvana Fallacy (Perfect Solution Fallacy)

Definition: Rejecting a practical solution because it is not perfect.

“There is no point adding input validation here because a determined attacker could still bypass it through the hardware debug port.” The fact that one attack vector remains does not mean closing other attack vectors is worthless. Security is defense in depth, not all-or-nothing.

Slippery Slope

Definition: Claiming that one small step will inevitably lead to an extreme outcome, without evidence for the chain of causation.

“If we allow one exception to the coding standard, soon everyone will ignore the standard entirely, and the codebase will become unmaintainable chaos.” One exception does not inevitably lead to chaos. The argument skips over all the intermediate steps (team culture, code review process, enforcement tools) that would prevent the slide.

Fallacies That Misuse Evidence



Appeal to Common Practice (Bandwagon)

Definition: Arguing that something is correct or good because many people do it.

“Everyone uses React for frontend, so we should too.” Popularity does not guarantee suitability for your specific project. Your project might have constraints (bundle size, rendering performance, team expertise) that make a different framework a better fit. Popularity is a signal worth considering, but it is not a substitute for evaluating fit.

Appeal to Tradition

Definition: Arguing that something should continue because it has always been done that way.

“We have always used Makefiles for our build system. There is no reason to switch to CMake.” The fact that Makefiles have worked in the past does not mean they are the best choice now. If the project has grown to support multiple platforms and cross-compilation targets, a more capable build system might save significant engineering time.

Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy (Cherry-Picking Data)

Definition: Cherry-picking data clusters from random results and declaring them significant, like painting a target around bullet holes after shooting.

You run 50 different performance benchmarks on a new compiler optimization. Three of them show a 15% improvement. You present only those three in your report and conclude “the optimization delivers 15% gains.” You drew the target around the hits and ignored the 47 tests that showed no improvement or regression.

Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question)

Definition: The conclusion is assumed in the premises.

“This is the most reliable microcontroller because it is the one that fails the least.” Reliable and “fails the least” mean the same thing. The argument provides no independent evidence for reliability, such as MTBF data, field failure rates, or qualification test results.

Fallacies That Shift the Burden



Burden of Proof

Definition: Claiming that something is true because it has not been proven false (or vice versa).

“We have not found any bugs in the new module, so it is bug-free.” Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The module might have bugs that your tests do not cover. The burden of proof falls on the person making the positive claim (“it is bug-free”), and that proof requires demonstrating adequate test coverage, not just a lack of found bugs.

Moving the Goalposts

Definition: Changing the criteria for proof after the original criteria have been met.

Manager: “If you can show the new approach handles 1000 requests per second, we will adopt it.”

Developer demonstrates 1200 req/sec.

Manager: “Okay, but can it handle 1000 req/sec with TLS enabled and database connection pooling?”

Each time the developer meets the bar, the bar moves. The additional criteria may be legitimate, but they should have been stated upfront. Moving goalposts usually signals that the decision was already made and the evidence is being managed to justify it.

Use this during your next technical discussion:

  1. Is the argument attacking a person instead of an idea? (Ad Hominem, Genetic Fallacy)

  2. Is the argument relying on who said it rather than what the evidence shows? (Appeal to Authority)

  4. Is the topic being changed to avoid the real issue? (Red Herring)

How to Respond to Fallacies Constructively



Naming a fallacy in a meeting can feel confrontational. Here are some approaches that correct the reasoning without creating conflict:

Redirect to Evidence

Instead of saying “that is an ad hominem fallacy,” try: “I hear the concern about experience level. Let us look at the technical merits of the proposal itself. What specific problems does it solve or create?”

Expand the Options

Instead of saying “that is a false dichotomy,” try: “Those are two options. What other approaches could we consider? I can think of at least three more.”

Request Specifics

Instead of saying “that is a slippery slope,” try: “Help me understand the mechanism. What specifically would cause X to lead to Y? Are there safeguards we could put in place?”

Present the Full Data

Instead of saying “you are cherry-picking,” try: “Those results are promising. Can we also look at the full dataset to see if the pattern holds across all test cases?”

Exercises



Exercise 1: Fallacy Journal

For one week, keep a log of technical arguments you encounter (in meetings, code reviews, online forums, or Slack). For each one, identify whether the argument is logically valid or contains a fallacy. You do not need to call out the fallacy in real time. The goal is to train your recognition ability.

Exercise 2: Steelman Practice

Pick a technical position you disagree with (a framework you dislike, a design pattern you find overused). Write the strongest possible argument in favor of that position. This is the opposite of a straw man: it is a steelman. If you cannot write a strong version of the opposing argument, you might not understand the debate well enough to have an opinion.

Exercise 3: Fallacy in the Wild

Find a technical blog post, forum thread, or conference talk that contains at least two logical fallacies. Identify each fallacy and explain what a valid version of the argument would look like.
